March 2026

Open Meetings

So far, we have lined up two open meetings of the Neighbourhood Forum, open to all who live, work or study in the Brixton area. Both of these will be held at St. Matthew’s Estate TRA Hall in St. Matthew’s Road, SW2.

Later on, we aim to host a series of meetings in different parts of the neighbourhood, so if you want to suggest a meeting place nearer to you, please contact the Secretary at apiperbrix@aol.com

Council elections hustings, Monday 27 April

Our next General Meeting will be a Hustings for candidates from all parties contesting seats in our area.  It will be held on Monday 27 April from 7 pm at the St. Matthew’s Estate Tenants Hall, near the North end of St. Matthew’s Road, SW2. This is in readiness for the Lambeth Council elections on Thursday 7th May.  The Brixton Neighbourhood Forum covers 3 complete Council wards – North Brixton, Brixton Acre Lane and Brixton Windrush – plus parts of Brixton Rush Common and Herne Hill & Loughborough Junction.

Understanding Planning Tuesday 2nd June
Once again at St. Matthew’s TRA Hall, 7 pm.
A briefing workshop by the Brixton Society to help you respond to planning applications, both large and small.  We will try to give you some pointers on how to object, or even support, local proposals.  Please tell us if you are coming so we can make space for you – info@brixtonsociety.org.uk

More Events coming up

When time and space permit, we occasionally include events and activities beyond our core area, if they are easy enough to reach.

A Night at the Musicals 14 March
A vibrant evening of songs from old-time classics like West Side Story to more modern favourites from Billy Elliot. Longfield Voices and Vocal Chords choirs will be joined by special guest soloists Chloe Todd (soprano) and George Reynolds (baritone) – uniting to raise our spirts and also some funding for our free community choir. We are pretty certain you’ll be humming along – if not breaking into song too. With a bar selling cocktails and a raffle with fantastic prizes to be won, it’s definitely not to be missed! TicketsVarious prices – check Eventbrite for details

Brixton Society

Thursday 19th March, 6.15pm at Brixton Library, Brixton Oval, SW2 1JQ
Henry Doulton’s ‘Lady Artists’, illustrated talk by Dr Jane Jordan
Doulton’s Lambeth Art Pottery at Vauxhall was remarkable for employing a significant number of female ceramic designers and decorators. This illustrated talk takes us inside Doulton’s to discover what conditions were like for this pioneering generation of professional women artists, and why a significant number of these women chose long careers over marriage, which at the time was considered woman’s true career. The talk will focus on those artists and assistants who lived in Brixton (including some of the most famous), and look at a range of Doulton art pottery dating from the 1870s to 1920s.
The talk is free, but please book here.
There is an option when you book to make a donation. Any contribution, however small, will be very gratefully received. The donations will go towards covering the cost of the venue. Anything additional will go towards the wider work of the Brixton Society, helping us to keep our walks and talks free or very low cost.

 Crime and Safety

 Brixton Police Station Counter
Against an overall trend to reduce public access to police stations in London, Brixton’s front counter opening times have actually been extended.  Opening hours are now 10 am to 10 pm Monday to Friday, and 9 am to 7 pm at weekends.  24/7 counter services are available at Charing Cross and Lewisham police stations.

Windrush Square Safe Hub
Following last month’s report, this is now operating in Windrush Square on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.
It is intended to provide a safe place for people to go late at night if they are feeling unsafe and need some help. It will provide advice, hot drinks, medical help and support for anyone feeling vulnerable. So far, provision is very basic and first impressions are that it needs to develop if Lambeth is serious about its new Strategy for the Night-time Economy.

Bystander Training Events
Recent publicity for social media being used to provoke teen-on-teen violence makes these training events suddenly more topical. They are in-person and Lambeth-based – more details from Fatou Gassama at fatou.gassama@ourwatch.org.uk

Wednesday 18 March, 2 pm to 4 pm;
Thursday 19 March, 12-30 to 2-30 pm;
Tuesday 24 March, 12-30 to 2-30 pm.

Funding, Training & Support

 Free Support
For Lambeth-based charities, community groups or other non-profit organisations, the Lambeth Community Hubs Network offers free practical support to strengthen your efforts.  They offer tailored capacity-building, a programme of training and workshops, peer learning and networking opportunities, plus a bank of useful tools, templates and guides.
Enquiries to info@lambethhubs.com or see the website: www.lambethhubs.com

Grant sources and deadlines
We are reducing this section because other people are now being paid to advise community groups on grant sources, while we are far too busy seeking funding to keep our own organisation going!

Trade Shows
Attending trade shows and exhibitions can help small and start-up businesses keep up with wider trends in their industry as well as finding new products, services and appliances.
Given the high profile of catering and hospitality in our Town Centre, take note that there’s a clutch of trade shows at the Excel exhibition centre on 30 March to 1st April including the International Food & Drink Event (contact ifeteam@montgomerygroup.com ) and Hospitality, Restaurant & Catering (hrc@montgomerygroup.com ).
Business Networking
Born or Made in Brixton holds fortnightly meetings for creatives, designers, freelancers and entrepreneurs, to provide mutual support and networking.  Next event is on Wednesday 18 March, from 8-30 to 9-30 am at 3Space (ground floor meeting room), International House, Canterbury Crescent, SW9 7QD.

Your Forum Bulletins

Get your name out there!  If you are doing something around the Brixton area – an event, a new service, or making changes in what you already do – you are welcome to use these bulletins to tell other Forum members. That’s well over 700 on our current list.  We aim to circulate around the 10th of each month, but please allow us a week to put it together, because we work on a very part-time basis.
So, send items by the 3rd of the month to the Forum Secretary at apiperbrix@aol.com.

Keep in Touch
We want to be inclusive and ensure that these bulletins reach all community organisations, social enterprises and activists in the wider Brixton area.  Please contact us at admin@brixtonneighbourhoodforum.org
